Table 1 Composition of pre-culture and main-culture complex medium. The pre-culture complex medium contains 60 g/L maltose, and no buffer was used. The main-culture complex medium, called Paenibacillus polymyxa complex (Pbp) medium, contains 120 g/L maltose syrup instead of 60 g/L maltose, and additionally 0.1 M MES buffer. The letters in brackets indicate which components were prepared together in a stock solution. 3.21 g/L citric acid was added to the medium by the stock solution marked with (a) and 0.4 g/L was added by the stock solution marked with (c) to the final medium
