Comparative display of single cell gene expression time series in response to a sporulation-inducing far-red light stimulus. Individual plasmodial cells (P1 to P26) starved for 6 or 7 days to gain sporulation competence were exposed to a far-red light pulse for 5 to 35 min. Before and at four time points after the light pulse, samples were taken from each plasmodium and the gene expression pattern analysed to give a time series for each individual cell. The relative changes of expression values were normalized to the maximal value within the time series and displayed side by side for each plasmodium and gene. The gene expression pattern in each of the RNA samples was analysed twice with independent RT-PCR reactions and based on separate calibration curves. The first measurement and the technical replicate are displayed in the left and in the right panels, respectively. The figure was prepared with Microsoft Excel for Mac, version 14.7.7
