  1. The mice were superovulated by injection of 10 IU of PMSG or rec-eCGs and then 10 IU hCG after 48 h, and ovulated oocytes were collected into an oviduct ampulla after 13 h as described in Methods. 1 IU was assumed to be 100 ng according to the conversion factor of the suggested assay protocol corresponding PMSG by standard curve. The ovulated oocytes were determined under microscope as shown in Additional file 1: Figure S1. The percentage of nonfunctional relative to total oocytes was around 20% with natural eCG and only around 2% with rec-eCGs used
