  1. Vero-B4 cells were incubated at 4°C in RPMI 1640 supplemented with fetal bovine serum (10%) and penicillin/streptomycin (25 U ml-1/25 μg ml-1) or in “pure” RPMI 1640 without supplements for 168 h. The iron chelator deferoxamine (1 mM) was added to part of the incubations. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release was assessed after cold storage (n=4).
