Morphology of Vero-B4 cells after cold storage/rewarming. Vero-B4 cells were incubated at 4°C for 168 hours in Krebs-Henseleit buffer with 11.1 mM glucose (KHG), RPMI 1640 (RPMI) and modified KHG buffer containing Ca2+ and inorganic phosphate concentrations similar to RPMI 1640 (KHG(Ca-,P+); Ca2+ 0.42 mM and inorganic phosphate 5.6 mM) and were then rewarmed in RPMI 1640 at 37°C for 3 hours. Most cell injury was observed in cells cold incubated in RPMI 1640 and KHG(Ca-,P+). The monolayer was disrupted, cells displayed small, dark nuclei and bleb formation occurred. Only cells stored in KHG showed recovery to original morphology.
