Images reveal that greater structural detail is visible when brain slices are biolistically transfected with 40 nm projectiles (A) when compared to those transfected with 1 μm projectiles (B). These are typical examples representative of >10 samples, and reveal exquisite detail of the spines when transfected with the smaller particles. Scale bars = 5 μm. Inset: 1 μm gold particles can be readily visualised inside cells; this is an example of a brain slice neurone. Scale bar = 10 μm.
