Bio-conversion of pectin and polygalacturonate to keto-deoxy-L-galactonate. Extracellular (left) and intracellular (right) keto-deoxy-L-galactonate production by A. niger ΔgaaC from 20 g l-1 polygalacturonate (solid symbols) or pectin (open symbols). Media (pH ~5.3) containing 2 g D-xylose l-1 and 20 g polygalacturonate l-1 or 2.9 g D-xylose l-1 and 20 g pectin l-1 were inoculated with mycelia (~4.7 g biomass l-1) and incubated in flasks at 30°C, 200 rpm.
